Feature Friday: ChicFlicks

When I decided to launch Feature Friday, there were two people that instantly came to mind. ChicFlicks is one of the them. Her work in videography has been inspiring to me ever since I clicked that follow button on her Twitter a couple years ago. I came across Dana's work through Social Media Breakfast YYC, which if you follow me on social media, you will know that this group is one of my favorites in the city. As I learned more about her and her business through her social media posts, I fell more in love with this business. But instead of me telling her story, I'm going to let her tell it.

Tell me a little bit about yourself and your work. Where are you from? What do you do?

I was born and raised in YYZ, but have chosen to make my home in YYC. I am a video marketing specialist, videographer and video editor. That’s a whole lot of words for “storyteller”.

What inspires you to do what you do? How did you start doing this work?

I am fuelled by frustration. I started the business because I was pissed off about there not being a way for small business owners to afford pro video. So I built the model, drawing on my experience in film, documentary and print media.

What inspires you most about your community (city, group of friends, etc.)?

I have lived in and built businesses in 3 provinces and I have never encountered a community as collaborative and supportive of the entrepreneur as Calgary. And we have the view of the mountains every single day. What’s not to love?

If you could give anyone who is starting out in your field (business, non-profit, etc.) one piece of advice, what would it be?

Find your niche and stick with it. You’ll be tempted to stray from that niche, but trust your gut. If it feels icky and uncomfortable, run.

Tell me three fun facts about yourself or your organization.

1. I can speak, write and read 6 languages, but only one really well. When I travel, It’s like a shaken martini of words tumbling out of my mouth.

3. When we were dating, I introduced my husband to my family at a family celebration where we sat next to Tie Domi, Doug Gilmour, and Pinball Clemens. He had no clue who any of them were.
