Feature Friday: Whitney Cowan Photography
I met Whitney for the first time last summer in Discoveryland. Whitney is mom to two of the cutest kids in the world, and her daughter was one of my Green Turtles, which is Sunday School for the two years old kiddos in my church. Over the year, this little girl stole my heart completely. Soon after, I just fell in love with the whole family. Whitney is an incredible photographer with a gentle spirit and a kind wisdom. She's an inspiring person who is also an amazing boss babe!

Tell me a little bit about yourself and your work . Where are you from? What do you do?
My name is Whitney Cowan. I’m a wife to my high school sweetheart, a mom to my two children, Easton (5) and Finley (3) and God has truly blessed me with being able to live out my passion as a wedding photographer. I grew up in a small town called Three Hills, AB. I love my roots, but I also love my venti half sweet peach black tea lemonade (Try it it’ll change your life) which is a small, but definitely significant reason we live in the city ;)
What inspires you to do what you do? How did you start doing this work?
SO much inspires me!! Getting to know each of my couples is a HUGE inspiration. It changes how I shoot with each and everyone of them. It inspires me to showcase their bond and connection uniquely. It challenges me to see more than just photos in my sessions. Ultimately it becomes this bond and a true friendship that pushes me to create images that they love.
One of the other really big inspirations is my family and my want to freeze time, to grow my love for my husband and preserve those memories. The first thing we do when life gives us change is look at photos. It takes us back to those moments that we want to remember or reflect on.
Finally, I’m really inspired by cinema, I love watching movies and TV series and seeing how they film, where the shadows lie and how they capture light to better tell the story and create a mood/emotion/movement.
I started my business in 2012, but prior to that I would shoot with friends/family since 2009. I continue to strive for more and I have such much more to learn and grow.
What inspires you most about your community (city, group of friends, etc.)?
I have an amazing community of friends and photographers. We laugh, vent, cry (sometimes) and encourage each other. We push each other to grow in how we manage our businesses to how we shoot. Even with trying to establish balance between family and owning a business. It’s a HUGE support in my life.
If you could give anyone who is starting out in your field (business, non-profit, etc.) one piece of advice, what would it be?
Humility is HUGE and I 100% believe “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel” Maya Angelo. It keeps me humble.
Tell me three fun facts about yourself or your organization.
- I have a serious love for coffee, I can’t turn it down!! Legit.
- In 2007 my husband and I back packed across Thailand and we hadn’t even tried the food before we left. Now we make it weekly at home.
- I am obsessed with the mountains.
