5 Essentials for a Spring Wardrobe

DSC_0546.jpg

We have been so spoiled in Calgary. The weather has been so nice this winter. With the warmer temperatures on the horizon and the spring equinox approaching, I thought it apropos to talk about spring style. I would like to introduce you all to my friend Brooklyn. I met Brooklyn while serving in the kids ministry at the church we both attend. Not only does she have the sweetest heart, her style is pretty incredible, too. What I love most about her style is that it is effortless, graceful and personal. It's not about trends or labels; it's about personality and comfort.

Read on and you'll discover Brooklyn's style inspiration and her essential pieces for a spring wardrobe.

{Sidenote: A HUGE thank you to Brooklyn for joining me in my blogging antics. I had a blast being paparazzi for a couple hours.}

How would you describe your style?

My style can be all over the place. Sometimes I feel like wearing floral dresses with heels, and sometimes I derive my style from that of a boy. I guess it just depends on how I’m feeling that day! In general, though, I guess I would describe my style as being cute and conservative, and according to my friends, it’s a mix of feminine and easy-going.

What inspires your style?

Again, what inspires my style comes from two polar opposite sources. First, I LOVE everything about old-fashioned period films and books (like Age of Adaline or Pride & Prejudice); wearing long dresses, curly up-dos, and no make-up. Obviously presenting myself in that way today would be unusual, but I do sometimes wish I lived back then so I could. This is incorporated into my style in how I love dressing conventionally in dresses and curling my hair. Second, I admire modern fashion (well, what I think is modern fashion – I don’t usually keep up with what’s on the runway) and how it encourages simple, and sometimes bold, prints and styles. I tend to avoid bright colours, and I am drawn to neutral clothing items. To me, modern style also incorporates a laid-back, sporty style, so I love wearing runners, vests, and sometimes jerseys.

What five pieces would you say are essential to a spring wardrobe?

Midi Skirt

It is cute and long enough so you don’t have to wear tights in the cool spring weather! It’s a great transition from needing to wear tights in the winter to no tights at all in the summer.

White Button-Down

White is a bright and clean colour that reminds me of spring! This item is also easily paired with a variety of clothing items.

Lightweight Quilted Coat

It’s thick enough to keep out the cool breeze, but cute and thin enough to wear all day and not get too hot in!

White Runners/Sneakers

Again, white is a bright and clean colour that symbolizes change, aka spring! These are also easily paired with anything, and, BONUS - they’re comfortable!
